Tips for Keeping Your Training Gear Clean
Personal hygiene is integral to a training program, aiding in the prevention of infections and bacterial risks linked to inadequate hygiene.To maintain cleanliness and avoid odors in your Muay Thai training gear, here is a guide to the best practices for various types of equipment:
General Tips for All Muay Thai Gear:
Air it out immediately! Don't leave sweaty gear in your gym bag! As soon as you get home, take everything out to air dry in a well-ventilated area
Wipe it down after each use: Use an antibacterial wipe or a damp cloth with mild soap to wipe down the inside and outside of your gear. Focus on the crevices and areas that accumulate sweat the most,
Don't leave damp gear in your bag!
Wash your gym bag regularly: Your bag can also harbor bacteria and odors.
Muay Thai Gloves:
Wipe inside and out: After each session, wipe them down with an antibacterial wipe or a damp cloth.
Air dry thoroughly: Open them up as much as possible to allow air circulation.You can use a fan to speed up the process. Some people like to use a hair dryer, but be careful of overusing it can damage the glove if the hair dryer is held too close to the glove.
Use glove deodorizers: These can absorb moisture and reduce odors.
Wear clean hand wraps: Hand wraps absorb a lot of sweat, preventing it from soaking directly into your gloves.Wash your hand wraps after each use.
Occasional deeper clean: You can try a solution of warm water and mild detergent, wiping the gloves inside and out with a cloth. Ensure they air dry completely afterward. Some people also use a diluted vinegar solution.
Muay Thai Shin Guards and Elbow Pads:
Wipe down after each use: Use a damp cloth or antibacterial wipes, paying attention to straps and padding.
Air dry: Allow them to air dry completely before storing.
Muay Thai Shorts:
Wash regularly: They can be hand-washed or machine-washed on a cold, delicate cycle with mild detergent. Turn them inside out to protect colors and any embellishments.
Air dry: Always air dry your shorts. Avoid using a dryer as heat can damage the fabric and elastic.
Muay Thai Hand Wraps:
Wash after every use: You can machine wash them in a mesh bag on a gentle cycle or hand wash them.
Air dry: Lay them flat or hang them to air dry.
Mouthguards:
Rinse after each use: Rinse with cold water.
Clean regularly: Use a toothbrush and toothpaste to clean or a mouthguard cleaner solution. (Available at local pharmacies or supermarkets)
Air dry completely: Before storing it in a ventilated case.
