Our Story

Founded in 1999 by the legendary trainer Laos Toohey, Young Bulls Gym has been a major contributor to martial arts in Australia, creating many champions and athletes inside and outside the ring. Laos Toohey boasts an impressive resume and is well known for his striking knowledge. During his reign in the fight game he competed in Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Taekwondo, Karate and Boxing. He amassed a perfect, undefeated record of 32 wins and 0 losses (15 via KO) with many State and National Titles along the way. A Pioneer in the combat sports industry, Laos Toohey as a fighter was part of a world-renowned team at the Fitzroy All-stars gym, under the guidance of the late Master Dana Goodson. They forged an elite pathway for combat sports. The team is well known for consisting of champion fighters such as Stan "The Man" Longinidis (1990 to 1998, 8 Time World Champion).

Laos Toohey has coached over 37 champions in a variety of disciplines at every level including an I.S.K.A. Super Middleweight World Champion. His most notable fighters include: Kael Coster, Paul Azar, Erik Miskle, Anthonie Trejo, and Albert Xavier.

In Tooheys coaching tenure he was named Star Kickboxing Trainer of the Year 1998 and Kickboxing Trainer of the Century in 2000. After a stellar career in the combat sports world Laos “The Asian Bull” Toohey wanted to continue to share his knowledge to the community and the inception of "Young Bulls Mixed Martial Arts" began.

When the "Young Bulls Mixed Martial Arts" shut its doors in 2015, it was a disappointing day in the chapter of our great story. From its humble beginnings to what it is today we strive to provide an environment of excellence for whatever your fitness goals are.

A star pupil of Laos Toohey, Albert “Timorese Assassin “ Xavier, coach and now owner of Young Bulls Gym, carries on the legacy of what Young Bulls Gym is today, with himself also boasting an impressive resume. You can read up more on him and our great coaching staff in our coaches section.

The club is steeped with history, tradition and culture.  Our team values sportsmanship, discipline, hard work and an attitude of having a go, as the main pillars that guide us on how we apply ourselves, not only inside the ring but most importantly, outside of it.
